Ó – Intrucciones para salir del agua 2023-2024

(Instructions to Get Out of the Water)

Written by María Fernanda Báez, reinterprets the death of Ophelia in Hamlet through physical theatre and dance.

With a deeply feminist perspective, the piece deconstructs the myth of Ophelia as a symbol of fragility. It gives her a new, powerful, and resonant voice, reclaiming her story and transforming it into a reflection of all women.

The original soundtrack, composed by Macarena Palazuelos, contributes significantly to this reinterpretation. Crafted with a unique conceptual approach, the score employs a sustained F note as a constant throughout, symbolizing the depth of the water—the central setting of the play. This single note serves as the foundation for harmonic arrangements that evolve based on the emotions conveyed in each part of the script and choreography. The composition modulates seamlessly between keys while maintaining the F note, creating a cohesive and emotionally evocative soundscape that amplifies the themes of the performance.

The play was performed at El Milagro theatre in Mexico City, running for 10 days. It was also featured in notable media outlets, including Channel 11 and the magazine La Jornada.

Rapture (2024) is a transformative artistic concept that explores the tension between our pure essence and the social constructs that limit us. Four artists, each representing a different discipline—music (Macarena Palazuelos), painting (Anastasia Shi), dance/acting (Liseth Bitar Saad), and live visual projections (Isra Bistrain)—come together to offer a multidisciplinary experience that questions the norms that guide and restrict our lives.

From the moment we are born, we are authentic, pure, and free. However, as we grow in a society that imposes its own ideas about religion, culture, and sexuality, those authentic layers become covered and molded by what is “expected” of us. Rapture aims to reveal this process of confinement within social constructs while also proposing a rupture—a return to the essential self.

In this performance, each artist expresses their interpretation of this transformation and the struggle for authenticity. The music evokes primal emotions, the dance movements symbolize liberation from constraints, the paintings explore the layers that cover us, and the visual projections transport us from confinement to openness and rebirth.

The music for the play was composed in parallel with the scriptwriting and staging, creating a seamless fusion where every element aligns harmoniously. Macarena's composition and production serve as the backbone of the performance, featuring a 40-minute recorded sequence that intertwines piano, atmospheric sounds, electronic beats, and narrated passages by Anastasia, Liseth, and Macarena herself. These narrations guide the audience through the character's journey, marking its pivotal moments. Enhancing the experience, the recorded sequence also synchronizes with the visual art programming, while Macarena improvises live on the piano, adding a dynamic and emotive layer to the performance.

Rapture is an invitation for the audience to reflect on their own fears, questions, and desires. It is a journey back to the genuine, to the essence that lies within each of us—an artistic experience that reveals the possibility of living without masks and with full authenticity.

Sonic Explorations (2024) is the result of a creative collaboration between Macarena Palazuelos and Canadian singer-composer Shn Shn. Together, they blend their distinctive styles in a live improvisational performance, fusing Shn Shn's vocal looping and electronic beats with Macarena's expressive piano improvisations. Drawing inspiration from a variety of musical genres, they craft a one-of-a-kind experience that takes the audience on an evocative journey, sparking imagination and fostering deep emotional connection.

Live Improvisation Around Movement and Color (2024) is a collaborative performance where Anastasia Shi and Macarena Palazuelos come together to improvise in real time. Macarena performs live piano, while Anastasia creates live painting, with the entire process captured in a video by photographer Olga Koroleva. The two artists inspire each other’s unique talents, resulting in an expressive fusion of painting and music. This creative collaboration later gave rise to the electronic remix "Green Eyes."
